Aqua Blocks is a water toy for outdoor use, which combines foam building blocks of different shapes and sizes with pipes, allowing children to create their own structures for water play.

Aqua Blocks immediately engaged our testers. Testers within the target age range (5 to 9) exhibited a high level of engagement. One of the adults described the product as “simple and fun”, noting that the easy assembly of the pipes and the opportunity to continually change the design meant children were able to use the product with minimal help which allowed them to explore independently.
The product was particularly beneficial in encouraging children to use their imaginations to create different structures from the variety of shapes. When playing with Aqua Blocks, children were experimenting with the design, on one occasion seeing if using less blocks and pipes made the water run through faster. The product encouraged them to think about how they could use the pipes in different ways and which pipes did or did not work. Adapting and experimenting with materials to test outcomes develops children’s problem solving skills and perseverance. Including some suggestions or instructions for different possible designs would extend the learning further and give them the opportunity to practise following directions.
